COIN TOSS

Phenomial Digital Art

This project began as an investigation into the degree of predictability in coin tosses based on a physical simulation. Originally I made black-and-white images depicting the toss outcome as a function of two of the components of the initial state of the coin such as angle and angular rate, then added colouration based on the number of bounces before the outcome appeared certain. The apparent degree of chaos in the outcome is determined strongly by the degree of elasticity in the collisions between the coin and the landing surface.

Low-resolution images are shown here, but the full 6000x6000 pixel images accessible as unlockable content to the NFT owners on Opensea reveal the intricate chaotic detail of the system.
